It was a joke, of course (here the article). No discovery gives a historical foundation to the legend of the Black Rooster (read the legend here), which tells as a myth the antiquity and the real importance of this symbol for the Chianti Classico territory.
Documented since the Middle Ages as a protagonist on the emblem of the Chianti League, created in 1384, it was seen already as an identity-shaping item also by Giorgio Vasari, who was called to decorate the Salone dei 500 in the Palazzo Vecchio and placed it in the Allegory of Chianti.
For centuries the Black Rooster has been linked to the territory of Chianti, in the history, culture and collective imagination.
For this 33 Chianti wine growers, who in 1924 founded the Consorzio, chose the Gallo Nero as a brand, which is still present on every bottle of Chianti Classico wine.
A very old, deep connection between this wine and its land (… and historically documented!).
