After the great success of the first edition – that took place on 9 March 2019 in Franciacorta – this year the “Festival del potatore delle vite” (Festival of the Vine Pruners) will be held in the Chianti Classico area.

The registrations for the festival, created and organised by Simonit & Sirch, are now open.

The date is Saturday 29th February 2020. The place: Castelnuovo Berardenga, where the “Pruning Contest” will take place. A hard-fought and passionate vine pruning competition that will reward Italy’s best pruners.

The competition will take place in the vineyards of the San Felice estate, which is also a partner of the Festival. San Felice is a leading company in the area, which has been applying the Simonit & Sirch pruning method for years and hosts the courses organised by the Scuola Italiana di Potatura della Vite ( Italian School of Vine Pruning).

The Contest is open to all those who want to show their pruning skills in a competition that rewards accuracy and speed. 100 pruners will take part, who will compete in individual (55) and team competitions (15 teams of 3 members).

The event will be conducted by Federico Quaranta, well-known author and host of the radio program Decanter on Radio 2, who has always been committed to the defence and promotion of traditional products and skills of the Italian agricultural world.

The public will be able to closely observe the pruning work of the competitors. A jury made up of Simonit & Sirch technicians and international pruning experts will decree the winners in the two categories.

The “Pruning Contest” will be the focus of this celebratory day in the countryside, dedicated to “know-how in the vineyard”. Admission is free and everyone is welcome: professional pruners, families, friends and enthusiasts.

Music will accompany the event, and you’ll find various stalls and a series of activities related to the agricultural world, including workshops with traditional craftsmen and the ‘Scissor Atelier’ held by FELCO, a leading company in the sector, partner of Simonit & Sirch and Main Sponsor of the event, together with FINE + RARE.

The competition enjoys the patronage of the Consorzio Chianti Classico, the Municipality of Castelnuovo Berardenga and the ASA (Italian Agri-Food Press Association).

Kids will have fun in the vineyards with gigantic coloured pencils in “Wannabe a pruning guy”: each child will choose a vine shoot and plant it, marking it with his name and date and giving life to a symbolic vineyard that will bode well for the future.

Other activities are also planned for the children, including a walk with the buggy in the vineyards and educational visits to the Orto Felice, the San Felice vegetable garden, which involves elderly residents in the area and some young people with disabilities.
