The weekend of grand cycling in the beautiful Terre di Siena is also well-known. On Saturday March 4 and 5 2017, the threesome of the Strade Bianche will take place.
Departure for the three events, organized by RCS Sport, RCS Active Team and La Gazzetta dello Sport in collaboration with the Township of Siena, will begin at the Fortezza Medicea with arrival at the Piazza Del Campo. The race is officially part of elite world cycling.
The International Union of cycling has counted it as one of the most important races on the international scene and has inserted it into the world tour calendar for 2017.
The last winner was Fabian Cancellara, who reached three personal successes in this race last March 5th. The 8th segment of Strada Bianca, Monte Sante Marie, will be named after him. In 2017, the third edition of the woman’s race will be second on the world tour calendar. In 2015, Megan Guarnier of the USA was the winner.
In 2016, Lizzie Armitstead Deignan, at the time reigning World champion, arrived in Piazza Del Campo ahead of the pack. Regarding the Gran Fondo Strade Bianche by Trek (long race, 127 km and 8 segments of “Strade Bianche”; short race, 74.5 km and 6 segments of “Strade Bianche”), after the great experience of 2016, with more than 2000 amateurs, for 2017, there are already 3500 cyclists signed up for trials, demonstrating the growth of the event.
The race is attractive also thanks to the scenic route, unique in the world, among Siena and its Crete.
