The exhibit, “Millesettecentosedici” (1716), has opened in Palazzo Salimbeni, the historic seat of the Bank, Monte dei Paschi di Siena, and will last from November 3 to November 16.

Siena, one of the two capitals of Gallo Nero wine, will host the end of the celebrations of the 300th anniversary of Chianti Classico with two appointments dedicated to its territory, its wine, and its history: the temporary exhibition, “1716”, will be accompanied by an exhibit/market, the Mercato nel Campo, on December 3 and 4.

Thanks to the collaboration between two of the oldest establishments of the territory, the historic Bank of Siena and the Consortium of Chianti Classico wine, the event will be open to the public, free of charge, from 9 AM to 7 PM, from Monday to Friday, to tell the story of the last 300 years and one of the most well known and beloved products of distinctiion of the territory.

On September 24, 1716, the grand Duke of Tuscany, Cosimo lll, next to the last of the Medicis, decreed an edict destined to mark a change in the history of wine. With a public act, he defined the outlines of the zone of production of today’s Chianti Classico wine.

For the first time, an official tie was instituted between a wine and its territory, 300 years before the origin of DOC (Denominazione di Origine), outlining the area of Gallo Nero wine. There is now an historic itinerary dedicated entirely to the territory of Chianti. It narrates the historic, socio-economic and cultural facts that not only contributed in making the territory of Chianti an oenologic and agronomic forefront, but which also signals it as the primary theater in the evolution of the Tuscan landscape.

With a timeline to direct the visitor, the historic reasons of this distinction are summarized. “1716” is a synthetic and informative retrospective, uniting the threads of the complex fabric which brought 300 years of wine excellence up to this date.

After November 16, the exhibit will return to its permanent seat in the Casa Chianti Classico, in Radda in Chianti, joining the present exposition, Biopark, a collection of native grapes, and “Feeling Chianti Classico”, a sensorial itinerary about Gallo Nero wine. In this way, wine, a product of the land to be discovered and tasted, reveals itself as a cultural and historic component as well.
