The best “family” extra-virgin olive oil is produced in San Casciano.

The winner of “Il mio olio” competition, organised by Slow Food Scandicci and Slow Food Firenze, dedicated to the best “family” oil, was Walid Zakaria – and his family – from San Pancrazio.

The competition took place on 2nd February and out of the 38 olive oils that took part in the competition, the winner is from San Casciano, and was pressed at the Frantoio La Ranocchiaia in San Casciano.

“Family oil” meant an olive oil produced only for the use of family and friends. Only people who produce less than 4 hectolitres of olive oil and do not bottle it for sale could participate in the competition.

“We’re in San Pancrazio – Walid tells us, with great pride – between the Fattoria del Corno and Santa Cristina. We have about 80 olive trees, of a few different Tuscan varieties, (Moraiolo, Frantoio, Pendolino and Leccino del Corno)”.

“My wife and I take care of the olive grove, from the pruning to the final harvest – he continues – and we don’t use any kind of treatment”.

“In 2018 – he concludes – we produced about 75 kilos of olive oil, milled in mid-November at the olive mill Ranocchiaia in San Casciano. We try to take the olives to the press soon after the harvest, generally within 30 hours from the beginning of the harvest”.
